I am not saying that you should pick another trainer instead of me but I won’t be able to help everyone so I am writing this to help everyone else that I can’t.

Not everyone may acknowledge the value of a personal trainer, but choosing a good personal trainer is one of the most important steps when working out to lose weight. In most cases, people who aren’t too knowledgeable about physical fitness tend to go about losing weight the wrong way. They sometimes aren’t able to choose and perform the correct exercises properly or they just might not be motivated enough. In both cases, working out becomes a hassle rather than a rewarding experience.

If you are just a beginner, then it might be wise to invest in a personal trainer. You not only get someone who is knowledgeable in physical fitness but also a workout buddy and coach.

However, personal trainers have become so numerous that it might be a little difficult to distinguish the good ones. There are undoubtedly a few bad personal trainers out there ranging from the obvious ones who do nothing but talk to others and fail to observe your workout to the harder-to-spot ones who actually know nothing about physical fitness and are only making you do totally inappropriate workouts with incorrect form.

Here are some tips to find and pick a good personal trainer.

  1. Is He/She Legit?

Before you decide on a personal trainer, make sure that he/she has the correct certifications with regards to being a personal trainer. Look into their credentials, education or any references.

  1. Client Testimonials

It is a good idea to ask some of his previous clients for a review of his program, ability and character. They are your best sources of information when you really want to know about that trainer.

Ask them about their experiences and recommendations. Ask them about that trainer’s attendance record, professionalism, character, friendliness, credibility, authority, and anything else you can think of. Try to dig up as much as you can about that trainer so that you’ll be sure you are choosing a good one.

  1. More Candidates

You can set yourself up to have a better chance of picking the correct one when you consider more candidates. Set up interviews with them and analyse and compare them to each other. Ask them about their program and for which kinds of people these are geared for – if their programs are more suitable for athletes, average people, or those looking to lose a serious amount of weight or gain a serious amount of muscle. Also ask them about their fitness philosophy.

Consider your own goals and see who is the best fit is for you. You will know who the best fit is when you have more candidates to choose from.

  1. Nutrition

Ask them about their thoughts and stands on nutrition. Or if they are able to help you with that matter at all.

Personal trainers all slightly differ on their nutritional philosophies. A good personal trainer is not only able to help you with your workouts but also with your diets, so this is why it is important to know what their nutritional philosophies are.

  1. Personality

A good personal trainer should also be able to motivate and push you to achieve your goals. Try to find out about their personality and check to see if it clicks with yours. Some personal trainers are no-nonsense and will instill that same level of discipline in you. Some are friendlier and are able to generate discipline and motivation in a more congenial manner.

The important thing to remember is whether their personality clicks with you or not. If you are more of the casual type, you wouldn’t want to spend your time working out with a stick-in-the-mud and vice versa.

  1. Request a Trial Session

Try to ask them for a free trial session of about an hour or the most they can offer. This is just to give you a glimpse of what they will be putting you through.

However, a trial session may not always show what the regimen will really be like because the trainer has yet to fully consider all your goals and circumstances. Just check their mannerisms and approach and how they are able to push you in a very limited time.

  1. Cancellation Policy

Lastly, review the contract and check for their cancellation policy. Make sure that you agree with it or negotiate with the trainer to change it to terms that you will like more. This is just a short step but is a very important one so as if you decide to terminate your contract, then you are able to know of any penalties or a chance of a refund.

If you have no prior knowledge of workout regimens or are not very motivated, it becomes a necessity to hire a personal trainer so that your workouts are optimised to suit your needs and achieve your goals. Consider all of the above steps to help you out in choosing the right personal trainer for you.
